As part of my work for a USAID project, I was tasked with building population density maps of several different African countries, including the DRC, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. THe purpose of these densities was to figure out the optimal locations for new tuberculosis testing facilities. By integrating population rasters and working with OpenStreetMap data, we determined optimal locations for new facilities and helped deliver key resources to areas where the most dense populations could be served.
Below are some of the maps I generated. The first four are population density maps, showcasing where the most dense areas of the countries are. The last two are buffer maps, which inform about where current facilities exist and where gaps in treatment may occur.
